What is reflexology?

Speaking of massage, surely you are quite familiar with reflexion massage. This massage is also known as reflexology. People are crazy about foot massagers in srilanka, but why?

What is reflexology?

Reflexology is a treatment that focuses primarily on the feet. The basis of the Reflexology theory is that every point in the foot is connected to various organs in our body. For instance, If you press the toes it will be connected to the head, intestine, and waist.  in the area towards the heel, it is good for the pancreas and liver, also the kidneys are in the arch of the foot.

Practitioners believe that if we apply pressure in certain areas it will be able to improve the health of the organs that are connected in it according to the energetic pathway. In 1915 Dr. William H. Fitzgerald an ENT expert introduced the concept of “Zone Therapy”. and 15 years later precisely in 1930 Physiotherapist America Ingram further developed this therapy into what is now called Reflexology.

Some say reflexology. However, others say that doing this massage has its risks. So what are the benefits and risks when doing this massage?

The benefits of reflexology for health

There are some studies that show that reflexology is good and has benefits for the body. Here are the benefits:

1. Reducing anxiety levels

A study involving a group of women entering the premenopausal period (which has a fairly high level of stress and depression) shows that reflexology can help disturbed psychological conditions. This was also evidenced in another study conducted in 2015. In that study patients who received reflexology before performing varicose vein, surgery was reported to be less likely to have anxiety and low pain during surgery until treatment lasted.

2. Helps cancer treatment

The points that are pressed when doing reflexology affect the work of organs or glands in the body. This has proven to be quite helpful for patients undergoing cancer treatment. Reflexology performed on cancer patients can increase appetite, prevent various digestive disorders, prevent fatigue and sleep disorders, and maintain the mood.

A study that provided reflexology on 87 cancer patients, showed a 100% improvement in the quality of life of these patients. While other studies also mention that patients who do this massage tend to experience fewer aches and pains than those who don’t.

3. Blood circulation

One point on the sole of the foot is directly related to the heart and blood vessels in the body, so that when performed reflexology will affect the function of the heart. Several studies have shown that reflexion massage can improve heart health. This is caused by the impact of the pressure received during reflexology similar to the baroreceptor reflex caused by the body to control heart function.

4. Good for people with type 2 diabetes mellitus

A study conducted in 2014 examined the relationship between reflexology and the symptoms and signs experienced by diabetics. From this research, it is known that diabetics who regularly reflexology have controlled blood sugar levels and experience fewer symptoms and complications.

5. Relieve headaches

220 patients with frequent headaches were given reflexology for six months. Then within 3 months of undergoing therapy, 81% of patients claimed that their headache symptoms were often reduced and 19% of those who always took pain medication revealed that they had stopped using the drug.
